E’s kidneys

April 6, 2009

I’ve been meaning to post the good news about Everett’s slight health concern. He’s had dilated kidneys since gestation, and another ultrasound at 2-weeks-old confirmed they were still swollen, one more than the other.

This isn’t Everett’s kidney, but his looked a lot like it, except that the black part in the middle was bigger (dilated).

It’s a pretty common issue for newborns, but still had his mama all worried. What we didn’t want was urinary reflux or ureter blockage, things that could cause scarring. A few weeks ago, we had another ultrasound that confirmed that one kidney was less swollen, and an X-ray (involving two catheterizations, since E peed the first one out because he was pretty mad) that confirmed there was no urinary reflux. Since that’s ruled out, the urologist said it could just be a case where the ureter is still hollowing out (they think the tube hollows from the middle out, so there could still be tissue cells where the kidney meets the ureter), and the issue should resolve itself within a year. We’ll go back for another ultrasound in 3 months, and then every year after that, just to keep an eye on the little lima beans.

I’m reassured, and thankful.

Just for kicks—our first walk in the stroller on a random sunny day in February.
E could still fit into his newborn bunting then!
